How do you use a disposable underpad on a bed?

Table des matières

Disposable underpads, also known as chux, are commonly used in healthcare settings and at home for individuals who may need extra protection against incontinence, or to keep the bed clean during various care activities. Here’s how you can use a disposable underpad on a bed:

  1. Select the Right Size and Absorbency: Disposable underpads come in various sizes and levels of absorbency. Choose one that covers the area where protection is needed and matches the level of fluid it needs to absorb.
  2. Prepare the Bed: Before placing the underpad, make sure the bed surface is clean and dry. If you’re using it for someone who is already in bed, you might need to help them move or roll to one side.
  3. Place the Underpad: Unfold the underpad completely. The underpad has a waterproof backing on one side (usually colored or plastic-like) and a soft, absorbent layer on the other side. Place the underpad absorbent side up, ensuring the waterproof side is down to protect the bedding. Position the underpad so it covers the area where protection is most needed, typically under the buttocks and lower back for an individual lying down.
  4. Smooth Out Wrinkles: Once the underpad is in place, smooth out any wrinkles to make the surface as comfortable as possible. This helps prevent discomfort and potential skin issues for the individual lying on it.
  5. Secure the Underpad (if applicable): Some underpads come with adhesive strips or wings that can tuck under the mattress to keep the pad in place. If the underpad you’re using has these features, secure them properly. This step is particularly important for individuals who move a lot in their sleep or when the underpad is used in a setting where it may be shifted frequently.
  6. Monitor and Change as Needed: Regularly check the underpad for wetness or soiling. Change the underpad as needed to ensure the bed and the individual remain clean and dry. When changing the underpad, roll it up carefully to contain any waste and dispose of it in a trash receptacle. Wash your hands thoroughly after handling a used underpad.
  7. Dispose of Properly: After use, fold the underpad with the soiled side inwards to contain any waste and dispose of it in a trash can. Do not flush disposable underpads as they can cause blockages.
  8. Hand Hygiene: Always wash your hands after handling used underpads to maintain good hygiene and prevent the spread of germs.

Using a disposable underpad effectively can help maintain skin integrity, reduce the risk of bedsores, and keep bedding clean. It’s also important to consider the comfort of the person using the underpad and make adjustments as necessary to ensure they are as comfortable as possible.
